Preparing for emergencies with a "go bag"
Emergencies, by definition, happen with little to no warning. Having a "go bag" ready can save time and reduce stress should you need to leave home quickly due to a severe storm, power outage, or other unforeseen event. Preparation helps you respond with confidence instead of panic.
The American Red Cross recommends that a go bag contain enough supplies to last at least three days. Include these items:
Bottled water and nonperishable food, including for pets, if needed
Several days' worth of medications, if possible, and a current meds list
A basic first aid kit
Flashlight, extra batteries, and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio
Cell phone charger and portable power bank
Seasonally appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes, and a blanket
Personal hygiene items, reading glasses, hearing aid batteries, hand sanitizer
Cash in small bills
Copies of important documents, including identification, insurance info, and lists of doctors, medications, diagnoses, and emergency contacts
Local map
Store everything in a backpack, bin, or duffel bag that's easy to carry or has wheels. You may need to break up supplies into multiple containers, depending on how much weight you can lift. Water containers may have to be stored separately due to their size.
If you spend a lot of time on the road, keep a smaller emergency kit in your vehicle. Include water, snacks, a flashlight, a first aid kit, and a phone charger.
It's also a good idea to create a secure digital backup of important documents. Think of insurance information, medical records, and emergency contacts. Storing these files in encrypted cloud storage or another secure location makes them accessible even if you can't return home.
A go bag isn't something you pack once and forget. Every three to four months, replace expired food, water, and medications, check batteries, update your contact and medication lists, and swap seasonal clothing as needed.
The American Red Cross and FEMA websites offer additional checklists and preparedness information.
